Iris Maria Tușa specializes in long-term photographic projects that interrogate dominant historical narratives and offer alternative, imaginative interpretations of reality. Her work explores communities and their interactions, delving into the barriers and connections between people, places, personal memories, and ways of perceiving.
A graduate with distinction from Falmouth University’s MA Photography program (2024), Tușa brings a research-based and narrative-driven approach to her projects. Her practice is grounded in sustained observation and a commitment to exploring complex subjects over time.
In 2025, Tușa joins the roster of artists represented by Elliott Gallery in Amsterdam, a gallery that showcases both contemporary and historical works across a range of photographic and visual practices.
Her most recent project, Thresholds, was exhibited in 2024 as a solo show at the Ion Jalea Museum of Art in Constanța. Drawing on her own childhood memories, the series documents life in Romania’s Dobrogea region. Rather than functioning as ethnographic study, the work reframes these environments as sites of cultural and psychological transition. Thresholds is currently being developed into a photobook.
Tușa’s photographic voice has developed over more than a decade of dedicated work. Previous projects include Childhood Memories (2017–2023), a limited-edition photobook distributed by Cărturești and Dominicanen bookstores, and two photographic journals produced during scientific expeditions to Antarctica: Antarctica: A Place Beyond Time (2017) and My Antarctic Journal (2019).
While Tușa’s early training in biology and polar research has informed her attention to detail and process, her current focus lies in documenting human experience, cultural narratives, and the layered histories of place through a reflective, methodical visual practice.
